Cripple Creek’s beloved donkey herd is set to be released on May 25, allowing them to roam freely throughout the town during the summer months. This annual event honors the original donkeys that were freed from gold mining duties in the early 1900s and have since become a symbol of the community’s rich history.
The release ceremony will commence at 1 p.m. at the intersection of C Street and Thurlow Avenue. A reenactor portraying President Teddy Roosevelt will provide a welcoming address, paying homage to the historical figure believed to have inspired the original release of the donkeys.
Throughout the summer, residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy the presence of the donkeys while respecting their space and health. The donkeys will return to their winter pasture in October.
Looking ahead, the 95th Annual Donkey Derby Days is scheduled for June 26-28. This free, family-friendly event will feature donkey races along Bennett Avenue, a kids’ zone, food vendors, and live music performances, including acts like the United States Air Force Academy Wild Blue Country and The Martini Shot.
